Memory Care at Catholic Eldercare, Albert J. Hofstede Care Center
817 Main Street N.E. | Minneapolis, 55413
For elders with dementia or other memory concerns, our memory care unit provides an environment of comfort, acceptance, and freedom, where dignity is cherished and lives are enhanced. Our dedicated staff is continually educated and trained in the newest, best practices for interacting with residents in a careful, respectful manner. Activity programming is specially designed to nurture and encourage each individual to live every day to the fullest.
Recognizing that each individual has unique requirements, our interdisciplinary team of caregivers collaborates closely with the resident, the resident's family, and the resident's physician to develop and coordinate an individualized, personalized care plan. This plan is created with utmost consideration for the resident's personal needs and wishes. Residents benefit from assigned personal aides, a commitment which strengthens the caregiver/resident relationship, and enhances the staff's understanding of the resident's wants and needs. Catholic Eldercare also offers MnemeTherapy, if desired or needed by residents. This therapy program uses movement, singing, painting and other creative activities to stimulate dramatic changes in the brain. With MnemeTherapy, many who receive the treatment have shown improvement in verbal skills, mobility, spatial acuity, and other important areas.
Residents of our memory care facilities are encouraged to take part in any or all of our optional, available activities. These activities include arts and crafts; weekly dances with live music; singalongs; exercise classes; games, bingo and cards; word games; movies; staff-facilitated reminisce groups; baking; and more.

Note:
Recently, there have been some changes to state regulations regarding the training of staff members who work in facilities serving residents with Alzheimer's disease or other related disorders. One of those changes requires Catholic Eldercare to notify you of who has been trained, how often they receive this new training, and what that training encompasses. We are also required to document your receipt of this information.
Catholic Eldercare cares for many individuals who have Alzheimer's disease or other related disorders, and therefore we conduct memory care training for our staff upon hire and on an annual basis. All staff, including those in administration, our business and development offices, beauty shop, dining service, maintenance, human resources, laundry, nursing, receptionists, physical and occupational therapy services, pastoral care, social services, therapeutic recreation, and volunteer services are required to complete this training.
A two-hour memory care in-service training is also mandatory for any new employee working directly on the memory care floor. This in-service training takes place within three months of the new employee's hire date The training encompasses the following:
- Understanding Alzheimer's Disease, dementia, and related conditions
- Assistance with activities of daily living
- Problem solving for addressing challenging behaviors
- Communication skills
This has been Catholic Eldercare's policy and practice since 2004.
