Ways to Stay Hydrated

Summertime brings longer days and cool nights. Which means more time to go on walks, enjoy cool drinks on the porch, picnics, BBQs, and spending extra time outdoors. These hot & humid months can also present some unique challenges. Dehydration is one challenge that can sneak up on you. Here are a few tips to stay healthy and hydrated this summer:

Know The Signs

As temperatures rise, so does the risk for dehydration. As we age, our body’s ability to maintain hydration is greatly reduced. Combine that with certain medical conditions and medications, it can greatly impact an aging adult’s ability to retain fluids. Proper hydration is essential as it helps keep our body and vitals regulated. According to the Mayo Clinic, some signs of dehydration are:

  • Extreme thirst

  • Less frequent urination

  • Dark-colored urine

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Confusion

Keep Water Within Reach

Heading out for a walk? Don’t forget to grab a water bottle. Catching up on the latest TV shows? Set a pitcher of water next to your favorite seat as you catch up on your latest stories. Hanging out with some friends? Take a water bottle with you. You are more likely to drink water if it's close by and convenient. 

Mix It Up

You don’t have to rely on just water alone. Mix it up with these alternatives to replenish your fluid intake:

  • Milk

  • Fruit & vegetable juices

  • Coconut water

  • Brighten up the flavor of water by infusing fruit. 

  • Craving a little fizz? Try the many different seltzers or bubbly waters on the market. 

  • Want something savory? Hot broth or soups are great choices.

  • Craving a sweet treat? Smoothies & milkshakes will hit the spot.

Incorporate Water-Rich Foods

While drinking plenty of fluids is imperative to keep your body properly hydrated, eating foods high in water content can also be a great way to add variety. Incorporate these hydrating fruits & vegetables into your diet:

  • Watermelon

  • Cantaloupe

  • Cucumbers

  • Peaches

  • Oranges

  • Grapefruit

  • Strawberries

  • Tomatoes

  • Spinach

  • Lettuce 

  • Baby carrots

  • Zucchini

  • Celery

  • Bell peppers

  • Cauliflower

  • Broccoli
